This Trader Joe’s Beauty Dupe Is a Summer Must-Have

Trader Joe’s is well known for offering affordable dupes of popular beauty products. The grocery chain makes it easy to enjoy a touch of luxury without breaking the bank.

One of its most popular products is a summer must-have that protects skin from the sun’s damaging rays. It is also, according to shoppers, a dupe of an expensive sunscreen.

At $8.99, Trader Joe’s Daily Facial Sunscreen SPF 40 reportedly is a dupe of Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen. That product currently retails on Amazon for $38.

Both bottles contain 1.7 fluid ounces of their respective product.

Additionally, both sunscreens are said to offer quick absorption into the face, leaving no greasy residue or whitish cast. Trader Joe’s Daily Facial Sunscreen offers oxybenzone-free, broad-spectrum SPF 40 protection, while Supergoop promises the same protection, plus it claims to help filter blue light (skin-damaging light emitted from your phone, computer, and tablet), UVA, UVB, and IRA rays.

Trader Joe’s says of its product on its website, “We’re selling each 1.7-fluid-ounce tube of TJ’s Daily Facial Sunscreen for a fraction of what we’ve seen similar formulas sell for at big-box beauty boutiques — and a value you’ll find exclusively at your neighborhood Trader Joe’s. You’ll find it in our health and beauty section, awaiting your (Daily) discovery.”

Dermatologist and founder and CEO of DermCollective, Dr. Muneeb Shah, made a TikTok video where he compared the two products. There, he discussed the product’s texture, absorbability, and feel, and admitted he could not tell the difference between the two after application. He added an important caveat, “For $9, I would probably go get this before it sells out.”

Trader Joe’s Fans Weigh in on the Dupe

In a Reddit post dedicated to all things skincare, Redditors shared their thoughts about Trader Joe’s Daily Facial Sunscreen versus Supergoop. As always, the internet has some real feelings about the comparison between the two beloved skincare products.

“I love the dupe! Never break out from it, amazing how differently everyone’s reaction is, thank god for samples as I do get hives from ingredients,” one Redditor noted, reminding customers that Trader Joe’s must give samples of all products in their store upon asking. A second wrote, “The dupe works well for me! [Supergoop] tends to give me such oily skin. I have to blot after an hour or so. The dupe I barely blot. I have incredibly oily skin, semi-sensitive skin.”

“I love them both! I feel like TJs felt a little heavier going on initially, but they dried down nearly identically. The consistency reminds me of a pore-blurring primer. I’ve worn them both now to long weekends at my daughter’s tournaments, and they both performed very well,” wrote a third shopper. A fourth claimed, “As someone who used the Trader Joe’s sunscreen first, it wasn’t bad but it made my skin look oily, even hours after application… It would dry down but then hours later look oily again. So I tried Supergoop, and it makes my skin glow and look good.”

Trader Joe’s has carved out a niche in the beauty market by offering high-quality, affordable alternatives to luxury skincare products. Several factors contribute to the success of its beauty dupes, including budget-friendly prices, use of the same ingredients found in premium brands, and products that offer value without sacrificing quality. By combining affordability, quality ingredients, strategic branding, and savvy use of social media, Trader Joe’s dupes continue to resonate with cost-conscious consumers seeking value and efficacy.
