For centuries, winemaking was a male-dominated field. But in recent decades, women across the globe have been flipping the patriarchal script, adding even more names to history’s list of important women in wine.
Even in the face of obstacles that have made it difficult for many female entrepreneurs to stay afloat, these changemakers have been fighting to make the industry more inclusive for future generations.
While we’re always up for acknowledging these impressive pioneers, Women’s History Month serves as a prime moment to highlight the ladies who have been breaking barriers and transforming their craft.
From female-run Champagne houses to the constantly growing slew of women winemakers in the New World, the growing impact of these groundbreaking trailblazers reflects a larger shift in society’s acceptance and celebration of women’s professional achievements.
Below we’ve rounded up eight female winemakers who should be on your radar immediately.
Caroline Frey, Domaine Paul Jaboulet Ainé
Though she comes from a family with a long history in wine, Caroline Frey stands as a force in her own right. After gaining early exposure to vines at Bordeaux’s Chateau La Lagune, Frey studied at Bordeaux University and implemented organic and biodynamic practices at renowned Paul Jaboulet Ainé in the Northern Rhône, which her family acquired in 2006. Frey’s mindful approach to winemaking puts soil nourishment front and center to produce quality wines while respecting the environment.
Wine Enthusiast recommends:
Paul Jaboulet Aîné 2020 Les Jumelles Syrah (Côte Rôtie)
Powerful and concentrated aromas of fresh red cherry, cranberry, mushroom, thyme, and a hint of black licorice seamlessly meld in the glass. The palate is vibrant, offering fig, blackberry, and blueberry, underpinned by a mineral-rich structure. Soft plum mingle with olives, creating a savory and complex experience. Cellaring through 2030+ should be rewarding. 93 Points — Anna-Christina Cabrales $143 Vivino
Patricia Tóth, Planeta
Patricia Tóth believes in the potential of Sicilian grapes. Born in Hungary, she made the town of Etna her home after joining the Planeta team in 2005. As one of the head winemakers, Tóth pays special attention to the stony and volcanic soils that define Sicily’s terroir, which plays a key role in her curation of bright, mineral whites.
Wine Enthusiast recommends:
Planeta 2022 Cometa Fiano (Menfi)
A layered melon element defines the nose, with a lemon undercurrent highlighting the fruit’s subtle tartness, while a handful of raw hazelnuts in the background adds some weight. On the sophisticated, thoughtful palate, the flavors sweeten, but in a measured, admirable way. 93 Points— Danielle Callegari $46 Wine.com
