Tesla Says Its Semi Will Enter Volume Production Next Year

Remember the Tesla Semi? The automaker has been mostly quiet about the project for a while now, but it recently gave an update on the Semi factory being built in Nevada, saying it will be ready for volume electric truck production by next year.

Tesla originally planned to start building the truck in 2019, but a series of delays repeatedly pushed that date back. When the automaker announced the Semi in 2017, it noted pricing of between $150,000 and $200,000, but it would be hard for Tesla to hold that pricing after eight years of inflation, a global pandemic, and political turmoil. One of the company’s customers, Ryder, talked about the delay in a statement and said it would see a “dramatic” price increase.

The company said it’s still on track for an annual production capacity of 50,000 units, but it’s unclear how recent trade actions could impact Tesla’s ability to reach those numbers. Import duties on Chinese goods climbed dramatically with the President’s new tariffs, leading Tesla to pause imports of components for its Cybercab and Semi. Tariffs on Chinese goods entering the U.S. reached 145 percent earlier this month. The automaker also seemed to acknowledge CEO Elon Musk’s impact on the business, saying that “changing political sentiment could have a meaningful impact on demand for our products in the near-term.”
