Small Thorworld installations make big difference

Loading bay specialist Thorworld Industries has proven that no job is too small with a series of bespoke installations for Cable Detection Ltd, to support efficiency and safety.

Part of the Hexagon Geosystems Group, Cable Detection offers both hardware and software to help builders, civil engineers and other professionals to locate underground utilities.

The company’s success has meant it has needed to invest in improvements to its warehousing operation, to manage the movement of often heavy goods into and within its premises.

Cable Detection first approached Thorworld to replace two small ramps, which were originally manufactured from plywood and installed to bridge the height difference between the production area and the warehouse. “The old ramps were in service every day, and some of our products – such as cable reels and lithium-ion batteries – are heavy. This left the ramps in poor condition, and they risked becoming a trip hazard,” said Daniel Salt, Inventory Manager at Cable Detection Ltd.

“We researched options online and Thorworld’s ramps were clearly robust enough to do the job. That said, I emailed more in hope than expectation – I could see they tackled big installations for customers and assumed our project would be too small for them.”

On the contrary, Thorworld embraced the challenge of designing, building and installing the bespoke ramps. The company’s distributor Loading Bay Service visited the site to take dimensions, before the ramps were designed in-house by Thorworld, and then returned to oversee the process of bolting them into place.

Within a year of installation, Cable Detection returned to Thorworld with a second brief. “A forklift had twisted the safety bar on our loading bay, so it needed replacing. Thorworld did such a good job with the ramps it was a no-brainer to hire them again,” confirmed Daniel Salt.

The latest installation consists of a highly visible yellow rail and safety bar, along with a heavy-duty curb along the bottom. The hinged safety dock barrier includes a gas spring to compensate for the weight of the barrier arms and can be locked in both open and closed positions.

“Both projects have made a big difference to the safe, efficient running of our operation, and I wouldn’t hesitate to consider Thorworld for future jobs,” concluded Daniel Salt.
