One of the most exciting new restaurant openings in the City of Angels is a transplant from New York: the storied Italian eatery Marea.

The restaurant, which is helmed by brand executive chef PJ Calapa, formerly of Eleven Madison Park, Nobu 57, and Ai Fiori, who oversees the New York eatery as well, has a menu that pays homage to its New York roots while embracing the bounty of California’s local ingredients.

Signature offerings such as crudi, lobster astice with soft burrata, and the beloved octopus and bone marrow fusilli pasta, are complemented by new creations that highlight seasonal ingredients from local purveyors and producers. Dishes that will be exclusive to Marea Beverly Hills include a decadent marubini caprese pasta, the already favored branzino tartare, as well as a pappardelle al Granchio with Dungeness crab, and “The Avocado”—a halved California avocado, delicately torched and filled with spot prawn tartare, seasoned with Calabrian chilies and fennel.

The fare is a perfect foil for the beautifully presented restaurant, which was designed by leading boutique architecture and design firm, nusla design. The eatery oozes understated sophistication and a welcoming ambiance, with a honey-onyx bar, hand-crafted blue Murano chandelier in the lounge, and entranceway with a unique oil painting depicting Sophia Loren from London artist Nasser Azam being particular focal points.

Meanwhile, the wine list, as could be expected, predominantly focuses on the wines of Italy, many of which are unique bottles preserved via Coravin.

The cocktail program is also Italian focused, though here, there’s a regular menu and a reserve menu, with premium spirits. Of the former, we love the Marea Martini — a choice of vodka or gin, plus tomato acqua pazza, castelvetrano olive brine, calabrian chili, and both olive and basil oil. From the latter, you can’t go wrong, though two standouts include the Canto Delle Sirene — Mijenta reposado sirene americano rosso, grand marnier cuvee du centenaire, and angostura bitters — and the Miele E Oro: Sir Davis American whiskey, vicario herba luisa , honey, and sage with a vegan foam topper.
