Lidl is planning to open 40 new supermarkets this year as it prepares to spend £500m on expanding its store estate.

It comes as the German discounter unveiled its “wishlist” of over 250 potential new site locations across London, with a special focus on affluent central neighbourhoods in the capital.

These include in Angel, Covent Garden, Kensington, Notting Hill and Soho, as well as suburban locations such as Finchley, Colindale and Uxbridge. Lidl said it was interested in high street sites as well as retail parks and shopping centres.

Lidl has more than 120 stores within the M25 and said it has requirements for at least 100 more.

Lidl GB chief real estate officer Richard Taylor said: “This level of investment is a clear sign of our ambition.

“As we enter our fourth decade in Great Britain and hurtle towards a thousand stores, there are still so many parts of the country crying out for convenient access to a Lidl store.

“New Lidl stores mean new jobs, new opportunities for British suppliers, and continued investment into local economies.

“Our latest site requirements brochure reinforces the scale of our ambition for the future. New Lidl stores mean new jobs, new opportunities for British suppliers, and continued investment into local economies.

“We’re proud to be one of the fastest-growing supermarkets in the country, and with this investment, we’re taking another big step in our journey.”
