Ford Unleashes Heavily Modified Mach-E on Pikes Peak

Called the Super Mustang Mach-E demonstrator, Ford says it weighs 260 pounds less and is ‘more nimble’ than 2024’s psychotic F-150 Lightning SuperTruck entry. Also helping the cause is better regen abilities of up to 710kW and an improved weight distribution, both of which should help shove this thing up the mountain with even more vigor than last year. Precise numbers are scarce since race teams notoriously keep cars close to their chest but they do permit an estimate that “over 1,400 horsepower” are on tap and that the battery is comprised of 50kWh worth of lithium-polymer NMC pouch cells.

Downforce is the word of the day with Pikes Peak climbers - and this Ford seems set to deliver in spades. In race trim, the car generates a mighty 6,900 lbs of downforce at 150 mph, surpassing even last year’s high-downforce configuration of the F-150 Lightning SuperTruck. A zooty carbon braking system, forged magnesium wheels, and Pirelli P-Zero tires are all engineered to work together and withstand the notorious 156 turns which face drivers as they race to the 14,115-foot summit.

“Racing is our test bed,” added Rushbrook. “Every data point we gather on the mountain helps us build better electric vehicles for our customers — whether it’s maximizing power delivery, improving regen strategies, or managing heat in extreme elevation changes. What we learn here goes straight into future production.” Race on Sunday, charge on Monday might be the mantra for a new era.
Romain Dumas is again behind the wheel, set to do battle on June 22 at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
