DANA Estates: A Legacy of Wine, History, and Eastern Philosophy

The finest wines tell a story, reflecting the soul of their terroir and the philosophy of those who nurture the vineyards. Nowhere is this truer than in Napa Valley, the region that has defined winemaking excellence. Among its most distinguished wineries is DANA Estates, an exclusive boutique producer dedicated to crafting some of the finest Bordeaux-style wines in the world. With deep roots in Napa’s history and a profound influence from Eastern philosophy, DANA Estates is a sanctuary for those who appreciate the art of winemaking.

The estate occupies a site that has been home to winemaking since 1885. Originally established by German viticulturalist H.W. Helms, the estate is one of Napa Valley’s earliest wineries, withstanding the challenges of prohibition and the shifting tides of the wine industry. The property was later owned by the Livingston family, who operated it under the Livingston Moffett Winery label. But its true transformation came in 2005 when South Korean entrepreneur Hi Sang Lee acquired the estate. A renowned figure in the wine industry, Lee had spent years introducing fine wines from the U.S. to South Korea. When he encountered the ruins of the original Helms winery, he saw not just a vineyard but a story worth preserving.

His vision was clear: restore the estate’s legacy while elevating it to one of Napa’s premier wineries. Despite recommendations to demolish the ruins, he refused. Instead, he sought out an architect willing to embrace history rather than erase it. Under his leadership, DANA Estates was meticulously restored, blending the past with state-of-the-art winemaking techniques. The estate’s original capstone from 1885 still stands as a testament to this commitment.

The name ‘DANA’ is derived from Sanskrit, meaning ‘the spirit of generosity.’ This philosophy is deeply ingrained in the winery’s ethos. As a practicing Buddhist, Lee approaches winemaking with mindfulness and respect for nature, believing that the land should dictate the wine rather than the other way round. This belief is evident in DANA’s minimal-intervention approach—organic farming, hand-sorting grapes, and allowing each vineyard’s unique characteristics to shine through.

Lee’s reverence for history also played a significant role in the estate’s architectural restoration. While many architects advised leveling the ruins and starting anew, he remained steadfast in his desire to preserve the original winery. Eventually, he found an architect who shared his vision, leading to a design that seamlessly integrates modern winemaking facilities with the estate’s historic foundations.

Another symbolic element woven into DANA’s identity is the Moon Jar, a traditional Korean ceramic piece crafted in two halves that unite into a perfect whole. This philosophy mirrors DANA’s approach to winemaking: melding nature and craftsmanship to create wines of balance, harmony, and timeless beauty.

DANA Estates’ portfolio is built on single-vineyard expressions, each site carefully chosen to produce wines of extraordinary depth and character. The estate is home to four primary vineyards: Helms, Hershey, Lotus, and the latest one being Montagna. Each vineyard is farmed organically, ensuring that the wines reflect the purity of the land.

The Helms vineyard is located in Rutherford, a 5-acre site planted on gravelly loam soil producing Cabernet Sauvignon with classic ‘Rutherford Dust’ characteristics—rich concentration, black fruit, and spice. Hershey, on the other hand, is situated at 1,800 feet on Howell Mountain, this site yields wines with elegant restraint, firm structure, and notable minerality.

While the Lotus vineyard is a steep, rocky 5-acre vineyard in St. Helena’s foothills, it produces wines of immense power, marrying the richness of Helms with the structure of Hershey. Jae Chun, General Manager of DANA Estates, states, “Our newest addition this year, Montagna, is planted in volcanic soil. With structured tannins and distinct mineral notes, it produces the beautiful taste of Cabernet Sauvignon.” DANA Estates follows a Burgundian philosophy in its Bordeaux-style winemaking—allowing the vineyard to dictate the wine’s character rather than imposing a uniform house style.

“The vision for DANA Estates has never changed,” says Chun. “From the beginning, our goal has been to create wines that honor the land, wines that stand among the world’s best, and wines that tell a story. We don’t manipulate the vineyards—we let them speak through the wine.”

The estate works with four types of fermentation vessels—concrete, oak, stainless steel, and barrel fermentation—to enhance each vineyard’s distinctive qualities. Concrete tanks, often associated with top Bordeaux châteaux, are used to ferment Lotus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, preserving its natural minerality and refining its tannins. Helms Vineyard Cabernet ferments in Taransaud oak tanks, emphasizing its floral notes and structured depth. Meanwhile, small barrel fermentations allow meticulous lot selection, ensuring that only the most exceptional wines make it to bottle.

DANA Estates produces only a limited number of cases each year, making its wines some of the most sought-after in Napa Valley. The flagship DANA Cabernet Sauvignon is released in extremely small quantities, available only to members on a waiting list that spans two to three years. The winery also produces Onda—a Bordeaux-style blend from multiple estate vineyards—and Vaso, a more accessible yet equally refined expression of DANA’s winemaking philosophy.

For collectors, DANA wines represent not only a pinnacle of Napa Valley craftsmanship but also a testament to patience. The wines are designed to age gracefully, with many enthusiasts waiting at least a decade before opening a bottle. DANA’s private events allow members to experience library vintages, deepening their appreciation for the evolution of these exceptional wines.

Even today, DANA Estates’ vision of preserving history while pushing boundaries of Napa Valley has positioned them among the world’s most revered wine producers. For these exclusive members who experience a bottle of DANA, it is not just a taste of Napa; it is a journey through time, culture, and the artistry of winemaking at its finest.
