In recent years, the UK logistics sector has witnessed a transformative surge in female entrepreneurship, says Maxine Benson MBE, co-founder of everywoman. From freight forwarding to last-mile delivery, women are not only entering the field in greater numbers but also establishing and scaling successful businesses, reshaping the landscape of logistics.
A significant indicator of this shift is the growth of women-owned enterprises within global logistics networks. WCAworld, the world’s largest network of independent freight forwarders, reports that nearly 2,500 of its member companies are now women-owned. Moreover, female participation in the network has more than doubled over the past decade.
A WCAworld spokesperson explains: “This is a hugely positive shift for the industry. We see female entrepreneurs bringing a valuable dynamic to logistics, combining problem-solving, tenacity, relationship-building, and trust. Their growing presence is not just reshaping companies but is helping to modernise and improve the logistics landscape by challenging norms and driving progress.”
This momentum is mirrored across the UK. There are almost one million women-led companies in the UK. According to the UK Parliament’s 2025 briefing, 15% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with employees were led by women in 2023. While this figure represents progress, it also underscores the need for continued support.
One of the most significant barriers to female entrepreneurship remains access to capital. To address this, initiatives like the Invest in Women Taskforce have been established, securing over £250 million in funding to support female and mixed-gender businesses as they scale up. Additionally, everywoman partner and sponsor, BGF (Business Growth Fund), has invested over £500 million in female-led businesses, positioning itself as the UK’s most active institutional investor in women-powered scale-ups.
The presence of women in leadership roles within the logistics industry has played a pivotal role in breaking down barriers and challenging outdated perceptions. These trailblazers serve as tangible proof that women can thrive in logistics, inspiring others to pursue similar paths. Their success stories not only motivate aspiring entrepreneurs but also contribute to a cultural shift within the industry, fostering a more inclusive environment.
Celebrating and acknowledging the achievements of women in logistics serves as a powerful catalyst for change. The everywoman in Transport & Logistics Awards, in association with bp, play a pivotal role in highlighting the contributions of women across various roles in the industry. These awards not only recognise excellence but also provide role models who inspire future generations. For that reason, it was time to include in the line-up of role models those women who are forging their own path and building logistics businesses of the future by introducing the Entrepreneur Award, sponsored by Amazon Freight Partner.
The rise of female entrepreneurs in the UK’s logistics sector is a great thing for the industry. It brings with it fresh perspectives, drives innovation, and contributes to the sector’s resilience and adaptability. Continued support through investment, recognition, and the uncovering of more inspirational role models like this year’s inaugural entrepreneur finalists will prove essential in sustaining this positive trajectory, ensuring that the logistics industry fully benefits from the talents and leadership of women.
The winners of the everywoman in Transport & Logistics Awards, in association with bp, will be announced at the awards ceremony and luncheon held on 26th June 2025 at the Park Plaza London Riverbank.
