The Asda Foundation has awarded £3.2m in grants for local community groups, as part of its 2024 programme.
The charity’s 2024 impact report revealed that it had given out 2,603 grants totalling £3,229,392 of funding to allow community groups to address the issues that mattered most in their local communities.
The retailer also highlighted that the Asda Foundation had awarded more than £57m of funding throughout its 36-year history.
The grassroot community groups used the grants to fund a variety of activities, according to the supermarket, including keeping the lights on in community centres at risk of closing, refurbishing outdoor spaces, and bringing people together to tackle isolation and loneliness.
The grocery giant also revealed that in May, the Asda Foundation would open its local community spaces fund, with up to £1.25m of funding available.
The Asda Foundation charity chair Karl Doyle said; “It’s days like today that really helps us to showcase the important work we do to help many grassroots groups and charities across the UK.
“Thank you to the grassroots groups and charities who work tirelessly to make a positive difference for the people and communities who need it most.
“We’re proud of everything we’ve achieved together in 2024 and are looking forward to continuing our support for communities across the UK.”
Asda joins a host of other retailers in working to support charities. In February, Aldi reported that it had raised £11m for Teenage Cancer Trust since partnering with the organisation in 2017.
Last month, Currys launched a new partnership with Cancer Research UK to recycle unsellable tech donations from the charity’s shops.
Additionally, in February, Tesco began offering free blood pressure checks to shoppers in partnership with the British Heart Foundation.
