Aldi moves ahead of Asda in food and drink value rankings
Aldi has overtaken Asda to become the UK's third largest grocer in terms of food and drink revenues over the last month.

Aldi has overtaken Asda to become the UK’s third largest grocer in terms of food and drink revenues over the last month.
The German discounter, which is set to open 10 new supermarkets in the next 14 weeks, saw its food and drink market share, excluding household revenues, hit 9.8% during the four weeks to 18 May, compared to Asda’s 9.4%, The Grocer reported.
Aldi and Asda were both on 9.8% during the 12 weeks to 18 May.
While Aldi had already surpassed the rival supermarket in food and drink sales by volume, Kantar’s recent data revealed that it had also overtaken them in value terms.
The figures differ from those reported in the market research firm’s published monthly market update, covering overall grocery revenues, including household, which show Aldi approaching Asda in terms of overall grocery share.
Aldi hit 11.1% of the market, rising from 10.8% the same time last year, while Asda’s share sunk to 12.1% from 13%.
Speaking to The Grocer, Aldi UK and Ireland CEO Giles Hurley said: “In the latest data we have taken third spot in terms of food and drink sales.
“From a volume perspective we’ve been the third-biggest player [in food and drink sales] for some time. Of course that’s now registering in terms of the pecking order of retailers.”
He added: “That’s not an objective for us. We don’t benchmark on placement in the market. But it’s an interesting output of our growth and it’s exciting. Seven in every 10 households shop with us.”
Aldi’s overall grocery revenues increased at their fastest rate since the beginning of the year during Kantar’s most recent 12-week period, jumping 6.7% year on year. Asda was the only grocer to record a drop, slipping 3.2%.
Last month, it was reported that Aldi and Lidl scooped up market share over the Easter bank holiday, despite it traditionally being a time when the larger supermarkets made the biggest gains.
Aldi’s market share rose 0.2 percentage points to 10.5% over the 12 weeks to 19 April, while Lidl saw its market share nudge up by 0.4 percentage points to 7.7%, according to data by NIQ.
Both discounters also saw a jump in sales, up 7% and 11.2%, respectively.
