VW will introduce a sub-$20,000 EV, but probably not here
Such a small EV would probably not do very well on our streets.

It looks like Volkswagen will be joining the affordable EV segment by 2027. Its new concept, the ID.Every1 follows the naming scheme of the ID.Buzz and will retail for 20,000 Euros or just under $22,000. As with many nice things, however, it will likely not make it to our shores.
The ID.Every1 will be the successor to the Volkswagen up!, a similar small city car that was never sold in the U.S. With an overall length of 152.8 inches, the ID.Every1 is a foot longer than the up! but still 6.1 inches shorter than a four-door Mini Cooper. It does, however, sit on five-spoke 19-inch wheels so it looks a little bigger than it is. Volkswagen

The VW ID.Every1 is positively minuscule, but still spacious
Under the "hood" is an equally-as-tiny 94 hp electric motor that can go 155 miles based on the European standards. Top speed? 81 mph. Try that on our six-lane U.S. freeways.
The ID.Every1 will sit on the MEB platform, which has plenty of room for four people and a maximum of 11 cu.-ft. of cargo space, beating out any version of the Mini Cooper.
The interior is also a snazzy place to be looks-wise, with accents that echo the body color and a funky-looking center console. Here's to hoping that makes it into the actual production version. Volkswagen
A new software architecture will underpin the ID.Every1
The ID.Every1 will also use a new software architecture, allowing for over-the-air updates throughout the car's lifespan. VW claims all future models like it will use this same architecture.

"The production version of the ID. EVERY1 will be the first model in the entire Group to use a fundamentally new, particularly powerful software architecture," said Kai Grünitz, member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management responsible for Technical Development. "This means the future entry-level Volkswagen can be equipped with new functions throughout its entire life cycle. Even after purchase of a new car, the small Volkswagen can still be individually adapted to customer needs." Volkswagen
Volkswagen aims to build an electric stable by 2027
The VW ID.Every1 will be part of what Volkswagen calls its "Electric Urban Car Family" of front-wheel drive vehicles. Its stablemate, the ID.2all, will be launched alongside it in 2026 for less than 25,000 Euros, or just under $27,000.
The German automaker will further preview other models in the Electric Urban Car Family in autumn 2025. Nine new models, including the ID.Every1 and ID.2all, will be released by 2027, as Volkswagen aims to become "the technologically leading high-volume manufacturer with the safest, most innovative and best-selling cars by 2030." Final thoughts
Whether the entire design of the ID.Every1 will make it to production is anyone's guess. Personally, I think it's just quirky and interesting enough to not be ugly and/or obnoxious. The interior, in particular, is pretty cool, especially whatever is going on with that center console.
I'm not surprised it won't make it stateside, given our addiction to trucks, SUVs, and crossovers, but I still wish it did. Not everyone who buys a big car properly utilizes all of its space, and I think the VW ID.Every1 would find some buyers, especially at that price. Just look at how many units the Mirage moved, and that was made by Mitsubishi.
