Volvo ES90: An all-electric sedan that defines the future

Volvo has been slowly adding to its all-electric fleet, and now the Swedish automaker is ready to unveil its latest and greatest model. The 2025 Volvo ES90 comes designed with sustainability in mind, which both pushes the manufacturer towards its zero-emissions goal and offers transparency to consumers. At a glance, it’s clear that Volvo has pulled out all the stops in developing one of the most advanced EVs to ever grace roadways.

The Volvo ES90’s tech defines the future of Volvo EVs

The Volvo ES90 follows in the footsteps of the EX90 SUV by utilizing the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack. The Superset features the hardware and software modules that will underpin Volvo EVs going forward.

The ES90 features a centralized system capable of performing more than 500 trillion operations per second. As a result, the ES90 will utilize over-the-air updates to both improve and grow functionalities within the EV in the future.

“The Volvo ES90 is one of the most technically advanced cars on the market today and is designed to be improved further with time,” said Anders Bell, Volvo chief engineering and technology officer. “Built on our state-of-the-art Superset tech stack, the ES90 puts safety at the forefront.”

Ride comfort comes standard thanks to Volvo’s third-generation electric motors and dual-chamber air suspension paired with an active chassis. Per Volvo, the ES90’s cabin is the quietest ever from the Swedish automaker and also comes equipped with advanced air purification technology.

The Volvo ES90 is the automaker’s second all-electric model to feature Safe Space Technology. The EV's safety systems and overall design were developed based on real-world traffic accidents and safety knowledge.

The electric sedan continuously collects real-time data on the road that allows Volvo engineers to improve safety functions. The ES90’s system is also capable of detecting and recognizing when the driver's attention leaves the road, so the EV itself can step in as needed. While Rear Occupant Systems aren’t exactly uncommon, Volvo’s is particularly sensitive, reportedly being able to sense something as minor as a baby breathing.

The Volvo ES90 will offer a range up to 435 miles

The upcoming Volvo ES90 features 800V technology designed to deliver faster charging speeds and provide a longer driving range. The ES90 will offer up to 435 miles on a single charge, putting it on the upper end of the entire EV industry. Not only that, but the ES90’s hardware is bi-directional, so you can use the sedan to power your home or reduce electricity costs by returning power to the grid.

On top of its 435-mile range, the Volvo ES90 also offers blazing fast charging speeds. Thanks to Volvo’s 800V technology, the ES90 can add roughly 186 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging.

“Our 800V technology marks another significant technological upgrade for our customers as we move towards full electrification,” said Anders Bell. “It makes our electric cars even more efficient, helps you charge your electric Volvo faster, and go further on a single charge.”

The Volvo ES90 will offer up to 670 horsepower

The Volvo ES90 will come with three powertrain options, each of which takes advantage of the Swedish automaker’s latest tech developments. The entry-level Single Motor model comes in rear-wheel drive and features a 92 kWh battery. This base trim pumps out 329 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. That kind of power puts the ES90 sedan at 60 mph in 6.7 seconds.

The Twin Motor version attaches an electric motor on the front and rear, which means all-wheel drive is standard. In terms of performance, the mid-range ES90 brings 442 horsepower and 494 lb-ft of torque to the road. The Twin Motor trim comes equipped with a 106 kWh battery and strikes 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds.

If you want peak performance, the Twin Motor Performance model is right up your alley, with a standard all-wheel drivetrain and a 106 kWh battery. The range-topping trim delivers 670 horsepower and 635 lb-ft of torque that propels the electric sedan to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds.

Regardless of powertrain, the Volvo ES90 boasts a top speed of 112 mph. All models can charge from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes at a 350 kW charging station.

The Volvo ES90 redefines luxury in the EV space

The Volvo ES90 combines the best of both worlds by pairing the simplicity of a sedan with the spaciousness and elevated seating of an SUV. The latest EV rolls out on a 196.9-inch wheelbase, which means passengers will have plenty of space.

The ventilated rear seats can be reclined individually and feature a lounge armrest. An electrochromic panoramic roof can let light into the cabin or darken to create a shade. Sustainable materials and colors come inspired by Scandinavian nature.

In terms of tech, the ES90 features Digital Key Plus, allowing drivers to access the vehicle from their smartphone. A 14.5-inch touchscreen display and nine-inch driver display come standard, as does a head-up display for both improved safety and convenience. The Volvo ES90 also includes a 25-speaker Bower & Wilkins premium audio system that provides a pristine listening experience.

The infotainment system itself utilizes Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms from Qualcomm Technologies. Google services, including Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play Store, come built in. 5G connectivity also comes built in, allowing for ultra-fast data transfer and updates.

Sustainability is a core part of the Volvo ES90

The Volvo ES90 is manufactured at one of the Swedish automaker’s climate neutral production facilities using 100% renewable energy. The vehicle itself is made with 29% recycled aluminum, 18% recycled steel, and 16% recycled polymers and bio-based materials.

The 800V technology provides improved efficiency through electric driving and the charging system itself. The Volvo ES90 features the automaker’s battery passport that utilizes blockchain technology to trace raw materials and improve transparency for customers.

The addition of the ES90 to Volvo’s lineup is just the automaker’s latest step toward full electrification, and puts the Swedish company closer to its goal of net zero emissions by 2040.

Final thoughts

At a glance, the Volvo ES90 seems like a run-of-the-mill all-electric luxury car, but the tech that underpins it is so much more. With a range exceeding 400 miles, a powerful processing center, and charging speeds few automakers can match, the ES90 could very well be on the edge of the next generation of EVs.

While I’m holding out hope that solid-state batteries will actually increase EV range dramatically and make their way to mass production within the next few years, Volvo’s latest entry is a solid step forward.
