Upper Hiwassee Highlands AVA

(UH-per hy-WAH-see HYE-ləndz)

In southwestern North Carolina, the Upper Hiwassee Highlands AVA is shared with northwestern Georgia. Located in the rugged, high regions of the southern Appalachian Mountains, the region is surrounded by national forests. The protected, heavily forested mountains bordering the AVA make for remarkable beauty and pristine waters. The region itself sits at slightly lower elevations and enjoys a milder, warmer climate. The Hiwassee River flows northwesterly through the AVA, where vineyards are planted to the valleys and slopes.
