STAT+: Key NIH grant review panels resume meeting, but are not ‘back to normal’
Key NIH advisory councils that approve research grants resumed meeting this week, though the sessions were abbreviated
After being indefinitely suspended in the first days of the Trump administration, key National Institutes of Health committees that approve research grants resumed meeting this week. It appears to be a positive step toward restoring the flow of billions of dollars in biomedical research funding to universities and medical schools that for months has been significantly staunched.
While the NIH employs its own scientists, most of its roughly $48 billion annual budget goes to supporting outside research aimed at improving human health and reducing illness and disease.
So far in 2025, the NIH has awarded $2.8 billion less than the average amount of funding awarded over the same period for the previous five years.
