Niagara Escarpment AVA
(ny·AG·ruh ih·SKARP·muhnt)
Named for the limestone ridge that runs over 650 miles through the Great Lakes Region, New York State’s Niagara Escarpment AVA is defined by very cold winters and long, sunny days in the summer due to its northern latitude. The temperature-moderating effects of Lake Ontario, whose southern shorelines border the AVA, ensure the area’s long growing season, while the limestone ridge helps trap air warmed by the lake. Conversely, “lake effect” snows can result in extreme snow storms, though these sometimes have the benefit of protecting vines from freezing. The AVA has distinguished itself for exceptional ice wines, made predominantly from Vidal Blanc.
