M&S tech provider launches probe following cyber attack
M&S' technology provider Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has launched an investigation into whether it was a gateway for the retailer’s cyber attack.

M&S’ technology provider Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has launched an investigation into whether it was a gateway for the retailer’s cyber attack.
The retail giant warned this week that its profits will take a £300m hit from the fallout of an attack on its systems over the Easter bank holiday weekend that led to hackers stealing customer data.
The retailer was forced to shut down its online clothing business and the disruption is expected to continue until the beginning of July.
TCS, which is the retailer’s “principal technology partner”, is understood to have been investigating the incident since M&S first reported it a month ago and is expected to conclude its audit by the end of the month, The Financial Times reported.
M&S chief executive Stuart Machin blamed the attack on “human error” and said staff at a third-party contractor were tricked.
Machin declined to comment on whether TCS was the gateway used by the hackers.
TCS also works as a “strategic partner” for Co-op, which too is recovering from a hack on its systems earlier this month.
A source told the FT the IT outsourcing company was not investigating whether it was connected to the attack against Co-op as its services were not related to its tech infrastructure.
