John Lewis promises to bring back employee bonus ‘as soon as possible’

John Lewis has vowed to bring back its staff bonus “as soon as possible” following a staff campaign.

The retailer, which also owns Waitrose, has not paid a bonus to workers since 2022 as it has been focussed on turning the business around after three years of losses.

A John Lewis and Waitrose spokesperson said: “Our bonus remains an important feature of our employee ownership model, and we’ve publicly stated that we are determined to pay one as soon as possible.

“We’re proud of our varied and unique benefits package and we want to do much more to recognise our brilliant partners.”

It follows calls from current and former John Lewis and Waitrose employees, as well as members of the public on the Partnership to reinstate bonuses.

Some workers have shared an open letter and launched a petition through the platform Organise urging the partnership to reconsider its decision.

In an open letter, they wrote: “We’re working harder than ever, with fewer staff and growing workloads, but getting less recognition.

“The bonus meant something more than just money. It was a sign that the company saw and appreciated us.”
