INTERSPORT Austria has taken a major step toward future-proofing its operations by opening a highly automated fulfillment center in Wels, Austria. Developed and delivered by intralogistics expert TGW Logistics, the state-of-the-art facility centralizes logistics operations and introduces advanced robotics to meet growing demand across Austria and neighboring markets.
Start of a shared journey towards automation
The new fulfillment center was officially handed over in January 2025, following the final acceptance of the automation system. The investment consolidates multiple smaller warehouses into one centralized hub at INTERSPORT’s headquarters. This move significantly increases performance, efficiency, and flexibility while enabling faster and more reliable deliveries to stores and customers.
Serving 1.8 million customers across Austria, as well as the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary, INTERSPORT Austria is a leading player in the sporting goods sector. With over 3,600 employees, the company sought a logistics solution that could scale alongside its growth and evolving retail needs.
“To keep up with our growth and the increasing complexity of our operations, centralization with automation was the logical step,” said Günther Junkowitsch, Head of Supply Chain Management at INTERSPORT Austria. “TGW Logistics proved to be a responsive and innovative partner, helping us develop a tailored solution.”
TGW Logistics as a competent, proactive partner
The new system features a four-aisle shuttle warehouse with space for 122,000 totes and cartons, using triple-deep storage to maximize space. Six high-performance workstations handle order picking, one of which includes the RovoFlex robot—an AI-powered unit that learns and improves with each pick.
Robots also handle tasks such as erecting and sealing shipping cartons, while TGW’s Warehouse Management System (WMS) oversees the entire operation. Fully integrated with INTERSPORT’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, the WMS ensures smooth coordination between automated and manual processes.
This partnership marks a new era in INTERSPORT Austria’s logistics operations, combining cutting-edge technology with strategic consolidation to enhance service and support continued expansion in Central Europe.
