The key to a successful Mother’s Day is striking the right balance between sentimental and indulgent. Breakfast in bed offers the ideal amount of sentiment—but Mom may not actually want toast crumbs on her pillow. On the other hand, a pretty box of chocolate feels indulgent—but does it convey that personal touch?

Throwing an over-the-top, bubbles-fueled Mother’s Day brunch is the perfect solution.

“Brunch can seem casual on the surface, but crafting a truly memorable, elegant Mother’s Day brunch requires a delicate balance of timing, ambiance and thorough details,” says Emily Conroy, director of catering at Raffles Boston.

With those factors in mind, we tapped event planning experts to share their tips for throwing an over-the-top Mother’s Day brunch that will make Mom feel extra special.

Splurge on the Bubbles

Champagne is a classic choice for brunch and makes a gathering feel celebratory.

“I would recommend beginning with a classic Champagne, vintage rosé Champagne or a prestige cuvée such as Dom Perignon Rosé or Louis Roederer Cristal,” says Conroy. Given that your brunch will take place during mid-to-late morning, you may want to go in the mimosa direction—and Conroy suggests a flight of them, using different juices besides just orange (i.e. peach juice for bellinis, maybe some strawberry or mango.)

“For a more curated experience we would recommend a flight of artisanal mimosas made with fresh pressed juice,” she says.

To make the experience truly over-the-top, incorporate caviar—and consider going with magnums for the bubbly.

“Dom Perignon out of magnums with caviar bumps out of kilo tins!” says Ashley Luna, food and beverage director at Farmhouse Inn in Sonoma, California. Two of the greatest things ever combined together in one moment.”

If Mom doesn’t drink, don’t forget that there are plenty of excellent NA sparklers to enjoy alone or in cocktails. (These Champagne cocktails are classics for a reason.)

Offer an Abundance of Options

Make sure your spread has plenty of pastries, and think about specific pairings for your sweet treats, rather than having just one drink option for everything. ”For something truly indulgent, try a chilled glass of Sauternes or a delicate Moscato alongside a sweet,” says Conroy.

Karen Segal, a veteran events planner based in Atlanta, recommends setting up a bubbly bar or a Bloody Mary bar so people (and most importantly, Mom) can choose libations for themselves.

“Then for sure include some non-alcohol options and seltzers as well, set out in the event colors,” says Segal. “Garnish, garnish, garnish and set the beverage table with pretty matching linen.”

When it comes to caffeine beverages, go beyond your everyday espresso or drip. Upgrade your coffee cocktails with the very best coffee you can get your hands on.

Lean into Spring Vibes

Mother’s Day is a spring holiday, and the time of year should be embraced in the decor.

“Weave in the natural environment,” says Luna. “Springtime blossoms are more fleeting than people realize, so go out and grab tree branches, wildflowers on bushes and herbs plants that are only around for a few weeks. It really captures the moment and places the day in a way that could not be replicated any other time.”

If you don’t have time to put together an arrangement, these floral, colorful spring cocktails will do the trick.

Most Importantly: Prep as Much as You Can in Advance

The ultimate luxury? Being prepared.

According to Segal, the biggest mistake you can make when planning a Mother’s Day brunch is “not planning ahead, not pre-ordering in advance from her favorite places for specific food items or baked goods,” she says. “Decorate in advance, light a nice, scented candle, have a glass of wine or Prosecco and be chill. Try to alleviate stress.”
