2025’s Met Gala pays tribute to the enduring legacy of Black sartorial excellence with Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. This year’s theme shifts the focus from spectacle to substance — honouring the Black designers, dressmakers and artisans who, for generations, have defined the cut, silhouette and soul of luxury fashion from behind the seams. On the red carpet, the interpretation was bold, political and unapologetically personal. From razor-sharp suits to fluid tailoring that defied gender, this year’s attendees embraced the power suit as both homage and rebellion, reclaiming the language of power on their own terms.

Jennie Kim

BLACKPINK’s Jennie Kim captivated the red carpet in a custom Chanel creation that reimagined the classic tuxedo. Her ensemble featured an off-the-shoulder black satin jumpsuit adorned with pearl cabochons, a white silk camellia, and jeweled buttons. A dramatic black satin overskirt lined with white taffeta added volume, while a two-tone Chanel hat and matching pumps completed the look. This outfit, requiring over 330 hours to craft, paid tribute to Coco Chanel’s pioneering role in introducing masculine elements into women’s fashion, aligning seamlessly with the gala’s theme.

Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa’s Chanel ensemble was a masterclass in intricate detailing. The custom gown featured a backless halter design in black chiffon, embellished with over 45,000 pearls and crystals arranged in a diamond pattern. A black feathered peplum and a long chiffon bow added layers of texture, complemented by a black sequin tweed jacket adorned with pearls, crystals, and jewels. Making a notable return to the Met Gala, Lupita Nyong’o donned a pastel green power suit by Chanel, featuring a double-breasted jacket with a satin collar, matching trousers, and an aquamarine satin blouse with a tone-on-tone bow. An aquamarine chiffon cape added drama, while accessories included Chanel camellia brooches, a matching hat, and shoes. Nicole Kidman stepped onto the 2025 Met Gala red carpet in a custom Balenciaga creation inspired by an archival 1952 Cristóbal Balenciaga couture gown. The Oscar winner wore a sculpted corset dress in silk organza, distinguished by its picot-edged basque and voluminous, asymmetrically tilted petticoat layers. A duo of silk satin bow belts cinched the waist and hips, adding a refined vintage touch.
