New York-based outerwear brand Hawke & Co. has designed and gifted the Central Park carriage horses a custom version of its signature packable puffer jacket. As the weather remains cold in the region, Michael Rosenberg, the brand's owner, was inspired to develop the jacket to help keep the working horses warm. "I know that the Central Park carriage horses are a controversial subject, and this is not a statement on that, one way or the other," said Rosenberg in a statement. "One of our brand mottos is 'We Keep Things Warm,' and as I drove past the horses last week during a cold spell, I thought, why not the horses too." During an event earlier this week at the 7th Avenue entrance of Central Park, a select group of horses were outfitted in their new custom Hawke & Co. packable puffer jackets in the brand's iconic orange color. The carriage drivers were also given matching puffer jackets, as well as a puffer blanket, to help keep the carriage riders warm during their rides. In line with its commitment to remain animal cruelty-free, none of the outerwear items feature leather or feathers. "Keeping animals, who have to work outside, warm carries that message in a creative but useful way," continued Rosenberg. "In our marketing and social media, we love to focus on the unsung heroes who keep NYC moving: the garbage collectors, food cart peddlers, taxi drivers. The carriage horses of Central Park fall within this group as well." A third-generation, family-owned business, Hawke & Co. has been producing outerwear since 1958.
