Haw River Valley AVA
(HAW RIV-er VAL-ee)
Located just east of the Yadkin Valley, the Haw River Valley AVA sits within the Haw River’s watershed. Archaeological evidence dates early Native American settlements along the Haw River as early as 8000 B.C. The region’s wine is distinctive thanks to its unique soil types, some of which are volcanic in origin. Not only does the region lie on the Carolina Slate Belt, but the region’s igneous and metamorphic rocks were formed from a volcanic island 700 million years ago. The wines here are made primarily from Vitis vinifera and hybrids.
