A while back, Apple announced CarPlay Ultra, a new version of its popular system that expands the display to digital gauge clusters and other in-cabin displays. The first vehicles to feature the tech have begun shipping to the U.S. and Canada, starting with new Aston Martin models.

CarPlay Ultra takes over the vehicle’s digital gauge cluster, offering custom displays for the speedometer, tachometer, and more. It incorporates alerts and information from the vehicle’s driver-assistance systems and can also show Apple-related data from maps and other apps.
While Apple is starting with Aston Martin, each automaker will have a unique interface once they integrate CarPlay Ultra. Drivers will also be able to customize with wallpapers and personalized layouts.

Bob Borchers, Apple’s VP of worldwide product marketing, said, “iPhone users love CarPlay, and it has transformed how people connect with their vehicles. With CarPlay Ultra, together with automakers, we are reimagining the in-car experience, making it even more unified and consistent. This next generation of CarPlay gives drivers a smarter, safer way to use their iPhone in the car, while deeply integrating with the car’s systems and showcasing the unique look and feel of each automaker.”
The new system requires an iPhone 12 or newer running iOS 18.5 or newer. It comes pre-installed on new Aston Martin models starting today and will be rolled out to existing vehicles via over-the-air updates or at a dealer service center. Apple said the technology will expand to include global Aston models over the next year, but has not detailed when the feature will become available for other manufacturers.
