These 7 JCPenney Locations Are Closing on May 25. Is a Location Near You Affected?
JCPenney continues its restructuring.

JCPenney has continued to close stores nationwide. The latest rash of store closures affects seven locations, which will all be closed on May 25. Is a location near you on the list?
List of Upcoming JCPenney Closures
According to USA Today, the latest round of JCPenney closures is not related to the merger with Catalyst Brands, which was completed in January of this year. According to a spokesperson for the department store, the merger was expected to result in the hiring of 60,000 employees and the opening of 1,800 locations and would include Brooks Brothers, Aéropostale, Lucky Brand, Nautica, and Eddie Bauer, which are all part of the Catalyst Brands family of goods.
The following is a list of JCPenney closures, which will be completed by May 25:
- The Shops at Tanforan in San Bruno, California
- The Shops At Northfield in Denver, Colorado
- Pine Ridge Mall in Pocatello, Idaho
- West Ridge Mall in Topeka, Kansas
- Fox Run Mall in Newington, New Hampshire
- Asheville Mall in Asheville, North Carolina
- Charleston Town Center in Charleston, West Virginia
Initially, too, the location at the Westfield Annapolis Mall in Annapolis, Maryland, was slated for closure. However, a spokesperson for the department store told USA Today that the brand was able to secure an extended lease agreement. Consequently, that location will remain open until Aug. 31.
The Closures Were Announced in February
Since filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2020, JCPenney’s store count has dropped from over 850 to around 650.
In February, the retail giant told Axios that eight locations would be closing: the seven listed above as well as the Annapolis Mall store in Maryland. “While we do not have plans to significantly reduce our store count, we expect a handful of JCPenney stores to close by mid-year,” a company spokesperson told the outlet at the time.
The addresses for the seven upcoming closures are as follows:
- California: The Shops at Tanforan, 1122 El Camino Real, San Bruno
- Colorado: The Shops at Northfield, 8568 E. 49th Ave., Denver
- Idaho: Pine Ridge Mall, 4201 Yellowstone Ave., Pocatello
- Kansas: West Ridge Mall, 1821 SW Wanamaker Road, Topeka
- North Carolina: Asheville Mall, 3 S. Tunnel Road, Asheville
- New Hampshire: Mall at Fox Run, 50 Fox Run Road, Newington
- West Virginia: Charleston Town Center, 401 Lee St. E., Charleston
Retail Dive met with GlobalData Managing Director Neil Saunders after the company’s third-quarter results were announced in December 2024. At that time, Saunders stated: “There are some good things happening at JCPenney and management is trying to move the business forward, but it all feels like they’re trying to run up a fast moving down escalator right now and progress is very limited.”
Then, in April, PEOPLE confirmed that the locations would be closing. While a spokesperson for the store did not respond to the outlet’s request for comment, the spokesperson did talk with KTTV-TV about the decisions. In addition to asserting that part of the explanation was “expiring lease agreements, market changes, or other factors,” they highlighted that “the decision to close a store is never an easy one.”
“We are grateful to our dedicated associates and the loyal customers who have shopped at these locations,” the spokesperson continued, per the outlet. “We continue to work to make every dollar count for America’s diverse, working families and welcome them to shop at our other JCPenney stores in the area and at JCPenney.com.”
JCPenney declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in early 2020, citing the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated economic impact as the reason.
The company later emerged in December 2020 under new ownership, including Brookfield Property Partners and Simon Property Group, with a new strategy to restructure its stores and reduce debt.
