Harvard University has long stood on top of the academic world. Thousands from all over seek a coveted spot every year at the Ivy League school with a reputation for cultivating future leaders, from Nobel Prize recipients to high-ranking elected officials.
But now, as the standoff between the university and the Trump administration escalates, the appeal of Harvard, and its standing on the global stage, seemingly hangs in the balance.
President Trump’s administration last week moved to revoke Harvard’s ability to enroll international students. The government told foreign students they must transfer to other schools or they will lose their legal permission to remain in the United States. While a federal judge has temporarily blocked the ban pending a lawsuit, the potential ramifications quickly became startlingly clear.
