Sausage Recall: USDA Recalls Popular Pork Brand for Possible Listeria Contamination

A sausage recall issued by the USDA has affected thousands of customers in several states.

According to Allrecipes, about 100 pounds of ready-to-eat smoked andouille sausage have been recalled by Bourgeois Smokehouse due to a possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The sausage recall affects products that were produced on May 12 and sold at retail establishments starting May 13. Rouses Market shops in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi carried Bourgeois Smokehouse’s smoked andouille sausage at the butcher counter.

The recalled sausage will not have a USDA mark of inspection to indicate that it is a part of the recall because it was weighed, packaged, and labeled individually at the butcher counter. You should not eat smoked andouille sausage if you bought it at a Rouses Market in one of the three affected states. You can get a replacement or refund for the products affected by the sausage recall after verifying with your retailer that Bourgeois Smokehouse makes the sausage you bought.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) identified the issue after samples of the smoked andouille sausage tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes during routine testing. However, no illnesses have been reported as of yet.

Sausage Recall Is Just the Latest Recall To Affect Consumers

The sausage recall is just the latest recall to affect American consumers. Earlier this week, Publix issued a recall on its baby food due to possible lead contamination.

GreenWise Pear, Kiwi, Spinach, and Pea baby food pouches are being recalled by the well-known grocery store chain. The 4-ounce plastic bags can have “elevated levels of lead,” according to business executives.

Consumers will get a full refund if they return the items to the closest retailer. Bowman Andros LLC manufactures the baby food, and Publix is recalling its products in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

“As part of our commitment to food safety, potentially impacted products have been removed from all store shelves,” said Publix Director of Communications Maria Brous in a statement. “To date, there have been no reported cases of illness. Consumers who have purchased the product in question may return the product to their local store for a full refund. Publix customers with additional questions may call our customer care department toll-free at 1-800-242-1227 or visit our website at publix.com.”
