Mazda Recalls Over 183,000 Vehicles. Which Models Are Affected?
Mazda is recalling vehicles for a faulty air bag sensor and indicator light.

Automaker Mazda is recalling 183,656 vehicles for two separate issues. The specific models affected are the CX-30, Mazda3, and MX-5.
The recalls for the CX-30 (2024-2025 models) and Mazda3 (2024-2025) involve an issue with an air bag sensor. The Sophisticated Air Bag Sensor is purportedly sending codes that could potentially deactivate the air bag when the battery is low. As such, the automaker is recalling about 171,412 vehicles manufactured between May 2023 and January 2025 in Japan and Mexico.
After someone in the U.S. reported a potential air bag warning light problem, Mazda looked into the issue. An investigation determined the trouble was not a safety concern, but rather due to driver error. Apparently, the ignition was left in the “on” position, but the vehicle was never started.
“This caused the battery to deplete to a level where the engine could no longer be started, resulting in the illumination of the air bag warning light after the battery is recharged then the engine is started,” the company stated, per USA Today.
Mazda owners can bring their vehicles to a dealer, where the air bag sensor will be updated with new software or replaced. Owners should receive recall notifications from the car company by the end of July.
Recall on Mazda MX-5
Roughly 12,244 Mazda MX-5 models are being recalled for an indicator light problem. According to the automaker, the indicator light does not illuminate as it should when a traction control system or dynamic stability control system malfunctions, leaving open the possibility of a crash.
The light failure appears to be the result of a software error, which was discovered by a Mazda supplier earlier this year. As of May 19, the automaker has not reported any accidents or injuries related to the faulty indicator in the U.S. or U.S. territories.
To correct the issue, dealers are replacing the dynamic stability control units in the MX-5 model. Recall notification letters are going out by July 21. For questions or concerns, owners can contact customer service at 1-800-222-5500 and press option 6.
Mazda is not alone in recalls this year. In March, 35,000 Lincoln Navigator owners were notified by Ford of the potential risk of fire due to faulty wiring in the outside mirrors. Additionally, nearly 23,000 vehicles made by Kia were recalled in January after an employee forgot to bolt down seats.
