(LS&Co.) had launched a new initiative, commissioning 25 new murals to be painted across San Francisco in honor of the 25th anniversary of its Community Day. Known as “These City Walls,” the initiative is part of Levi Strauss & Co.’s continued commitment to urban revitalization, which sees the company investing in local impact through strategic grantmaking, employee volunteerism, and partnerships with aligned businesses and nonprofits. In addition to launching the mural initiative, nearly 600 San Francisco–based LS&Co. employees will volunteer with 20 nonprofit organizations on May 8, continuing a 25-year tradition, while over 150,000 USD in grants will be distributed to support their work across the city. “San Francisco is woven into the very fabric of Levi Strauss & Co. – from our first jeans, which were made to handle the wear and tear of the Gold Rush, to the products we sell around the world today, which still proudly bear the city’s name,” said Michelle Gass, president and CEO of LS&Co, in a statement. “For over 170 years, San Francisco has inspired our creativity, our values, and our commitment to make a difference. We’re going to do our part to ensure the city’s future is as bold and bright as its past – and these murals are just one step in that larger effort.” In partnership with 1AM Projects and local creatives, LS&Co aims to install 25 vibrant murals across San Francisco over the coming year. The initiative aims to transform overlooked urban spaces into dynamic artworks that celebrate the city’s resilience, diversity, and cultural identity. Developed in collaboration with artists, nonprofits, Community Benefit Districts, small businesses, and residents, each mural will reflect community input gathered in advance to make sure that the final works resonate with and enhance the neighborhoods they inhabit. The first ten murals to be completed will be painted in key neighborhoods, including the Financial District, Union Square, Tenderloin, SOMA, East Cut, Potrero Hill, and Japantown. The series begins with the restoration of West Coastin’, a landmark mural originally created in 2011 in Potrero Hill. Spanning 85 feet wide by 25 feet tall, the mural celebrates California’s spirit and will be seen daily by an estimated 150,000 drivers on the 280 freeway, as well as local residents. These murals reflect the company’s commitment to its hometown, San Francisco, where it was founded in 1853. In 2023, LS&Co. reaffirmed its dedication to the city through expanded philanthropy and volunteerism. Over the past two years, it has contributed over 1.2 million dollars to organizations supporting arts, culture, and community revitalization, with employees volunteering nearly 4,700 hours. In 2024, the company also joined forces with Gap Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Visa Inc., and Wells Fargo & Co. to establish the Downtown Volunteer Coalition, uniting corporate efforts to help reinvigorate San Francisco’s urban core. "San Francisco’s comeback is accelerated when our largest companies invest in our city," said Mayor Daniel Lurie in a statement. "I'm excited that Levi Strauss & Co. will commission 25 new murals and bring vibrant public art to neighborhoods across San Francisco. New murals designed by local artists will beautify our neighborhoods while making our communities more welcoming for residents and visitors." Marking 25 years of Community Day, LS&Co. has contributed more than 5 million dollars to 1,600+ global volunteer projects. This year, employees in more than 50 locations will support local nonprofits, with over 500,000 dollars in grants awarded worldwide. Beyond Community Day, LS&Co. promotes year-round civic engagement through paid volunteer hours and a donation matching program of up to 2,000 dollars per employee annually.
