Germany’s first ‘Vinothon’ blends wine, running and scenery in the Rheingau

The inaugural Henkell Vinothon – Wiesbaden/Rheingau Savour Marathon debuts on 6 September 2025, offering runners a scenic route through vineyards and estates with wine tastings en route. Featuring both marathon and half-marathon options, the event prioritises enjoyment over pace and early bird discounts are available until 9 June. On Saturday, 6 September, a wholly new format for endurance sport will make its debut in Germany: the 1st Henkell Vinothon. The race begins and ends at the historic Schloss Henkell, unfolding across the bucolic Rheingau landscape and passing landmarks such as Schloss Johannisberg and Schloss Vollrads, names that will stir the heart of any wine lover. Inspired by France’s famed Médoc Marathon, this German interpretation is less about personal records and more about indulgence and immersion. Wine, food and scenery take centre stage in what organiser Kai Walter of WEC GmbH describes as “a feast for all the senses.”

Sip, savour and stride

Participants can choose between a full marathon (42.2 km) and a half-marathon (21.1 km), with entries open to teams as well as individuals. The experience is shaped as much by what happens along the course as by the finish line itself: a minimum of ten “savour stations” will provide wine tastings (always with non-alcoholic options) and local culinary specialities. These gastronomic interludes are not optional detours; they are, in fact, a mandatory and defining part of the event. As Dr. Andreas Brokemper, CEO of Henkell Freixenet, put it: “Savour runs have a long tradition in many countries, which makes us all the more delighted to support such an event as title sponsor with Henkell, right in the heart of one of Germany’s most beautiful wine-growing regions.”

Schloss Henkell as centre stage

The weekend begins on Friday, 5 September, when Schloss Henkell transforms into the Vinothon Expo hub, featuring race pack pick-up and a welcoming Pasta Party. The next morning sees runners warmed up and shuttled to the start line in Rüdesheim, followed by staggered group starts between 12 and 1 pm. Marathoners will follow a scenic route winding through vineyards, villages and estates. Half-marathoners will be returned to Wiesbaden by boat and shuttle to join all participants for the celebratory finisher party and buffet at Schloss Henkell.
