Since 23andMe filed for bankruptcy in March, 1.9 million of its 15 million DNA testing customers have asked the company to delete their data, interim CEO Joe Selsavage told federal lawmakers on Tuesday. 

The future of the company’s genetic hoard is uncertain as 23andMe undergoes a court-supervised sale. As some consumers take action to protect their genetic information, members of the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday examined the privacy and national security risks posed by the once high-flying DNA testing company’s sale. 

In May, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals had entered into an agreement to buy 23andMe for $256 million, but the court reopened the auction to final bids last week. Anne Wojcicki, who cofounded the company in 2006, answered to the committee as she attempts her own bid under a new nonprofit entity called TTAM Research Institute.
