Outdoor Retailer REI Celebrates Growth With Exciting Summer Expansion
New REI locations will plant roots in California and New York.

Outdoor retailer REI is continuing its retail growth. The company is expanding its footprint with the addition of new stores.
According to a press release, all new locations will offer outdoor recreation gear and apparel, and a full-service bike shop. Stores in cold-weather locations will have seasonal ski and snowboard shops.
Stores will continue to open their doors throughout summer 2025. The cities where REI will plant, or has recently planted, roots include:
- Carlsbad, California (relocation, opened in February).
- Lynnwood, Washington (relocation, opened in April).
- Amherst, New York (opened in April).
- Chico, California (opens June 20).
- Elk Grove, California (opens July 25).
The company will also open a store in Prosper, Texas in 2026. This adds to a previously announced St. George, Utah branch.
“Our store employees are the heart of the co-op, and they welcome everyone to experience our product expertise, resources, and inspiration in support of an active lifestyle,” said Mary-Farrell Tarbox, REI VP of Stores. “Cities that will have new stores represent communities that serve as a gateway to some of the country’s most incredible natural places and where our members currently live or destinations where they love to play outside.”
Each new REI location will be stocked with a wide range of outdoor gear and apparel. Customers will also have access to a full-service bike shop in every store, staffed by certified mechanics who can handle tune-ups and repairs for mountain bikes, road bikes, hybrids, and e-bikes.
In Amherst, Durango, and Lynnwood, REI will operate seasonal ski and snowboard shops, offering expert servicing for all boards. The St. George store will include Nordic ski hand tuning and snowboard mounting services.
Those who participate in the REI Co-op enjoy added perks, including 20% off bike and snow shop services. They are also eligible for a free Co-op Cycles inner tube with any flat tire repair (when installed during service), and complimentary machine wax for skis or boards.
Additional stores for 2026 will be announced as leases are finalized. These stores are hiring for staff members, who number around 35-45 per store.
REI Is The Country’s Largest Consumer Co-Op
REI is the biggest business in the United States, structured as a consumer cooperative. This structure means that customers, rather than shareholders, own and ultimately control the company.
Co-op members enjoy a wide range of benefits, including free U.S. standard shipping, bike and snow shop discounts, and member coupons and discounts. Additionally, they are eligible for a used gear trade-in program, an annual member reward of 10% back on eligible purchases, an extended satisfaction guarantee window of one year, and other benefits.
When someone becomes an REI Co-op member, they join a community committed to protecting access to the outdoors for all. Every new $30 membership includes a $5 donation to the REI Cooperative Action Fund, which supports nonprofits nationwide working to make outdoor spaces more inclusive, and to advance research on nature’s role in human health.
Plus, as each new store opens, the fund invests in local organizations dedicated to expanding outdoor access and equity in the surrounding community.
