Localized Hydrogel Microspheres for Osteoarthritis Treatment: Recruitment and Differentiation of Stem Cells (Adv. Healthcare Mater. 12/2025)

Targeted Hydrogel Microspheres

In article 2403490, Wei Huang, Lili Dong, and co-workers introduce a novel strategy that utilizes a bioactive ECM derived from IFN-γ-stimulated mesenchymal stem cells. This ECM is encapsulated in modified hyaluronic acid hydrogel microspheres that effectively mimic the cartilage's natural environment, promoting targeted adhesion and retention at damaged sites. The system facilitates the recruitment of endogenous stem cells through chemokine release, while also enhancing chondrogenic differentiation via bioactive factors and integrin interactions, thereby boosting the regenerative potential of stem cells.
