Buchette del Vino NYC will be replicating the windows of Florence through which wine is traditionally served, but in New York City's Times Square. Opening this month on Broadway, the concept is the brainchild of Jack Logue and Chris Miller, who previously worked on Lambs Club in Midtown's Chatwal Hotel together. Buchette del Vino NYC ('buchette del vino', literally meaning 'little wine holes', being the Florentine term for these windows) promises to deliver espresso, beer, tramezzini, pasta and, of course, wine through a hole in the wall – although an artist's mockup of the new spot appears to show that there will be a bar of sorts as well. "During my time in Italy, I developed a deep appreciation for the food and the culture around it — how something as simple as a glass of wine or an espresso and a sandwich can become a daily ritual. The wine windows of Florence capture that spirit perfectly, and bringing that experience to New York feels like a natural extension of what we're doing at The Lambs Club: blending tradition with creativity in a way that feels joyful and welcoming, while trying to be a beacon of hospitality in the city that I was born and raised in," chef Logue was quoted as saying in a press release. Tom Harris, president of the Times Square Alliance, claimed that the window would be "a draw for both tourists and New Yorkers" – according to one estimate, Times Square already receives an average of 460,000 visitors a day.

History

The reason why wine windows took off in Renaissance Florence is that they were a way of selling wine directly to the consumer tax-free, provided the ruling Medici gave their seal of approval. The reason why they have seen a huge resurgence in popularity in recent years is largely because of the attention actor and author Stanley Tucci has given them in his Searching for Italy travel series. According to the Buchette del Vino Association, as of February 2025 there were 161 wine windows within Florence's old city walls and a further 27 just outside, while a further 111 have reportedly been removed over the centuries.
