Family Dollar Launches New Partnership With Uber Eats. Here Are the Details

Family Dollar has announced a new partnership with Uber Eats, offering its clientele a unique delivery option for everyday essentials. This news came shortly after the discount store announced that its parent company had sold it for $1 billion. Let’s look at what we know about this newest partnership.

Family Dollar Now Available on Uber Eats

Per a company press release, Uber Technologies, Inc. announced a new relationship with Family Dollar, one of America’s most reputable bargain stores, to expand its range of reasonably priced home goods to Uber Eats. Customers can now shop for a wide range of everyday items available on Uber Eats, from cleaning supplies and pantry essentials to beauty products and baby care, and get them delivered right to their doors — whether on-demand or scheduled — from more than 5,000 Family Dollar locations across the United States.

The launch of Family Dollar on Uber Eats is a significant turning point in the company’s goal to lower costs and increase accessibility to daily necessities, especially for families and individuals looking for convenience and affordability without sacrificing quality. In celebration of this debut, Uber Eats is using the discount code FAMILY40 to get 40% off orders from Family Dollar that total $30 or more (up to $25 off). As usual, Uber One members will also receive additional special advantages, such as free delivery on qualifying orders.

“As millions of people look to stretch their wallets without sacrificing convenience, we’re proud to welcome Family Dollar to the Uber Eats platform,” said Hashim Amin, Uber’s head of grocery and retail in North America. “This partnership expands affordable access to everyday items while giving people even more ways to shop smart, save time, and stay on budget.”

No More Dollar Tree Partnership

This new partnership with Uber Eats follows the news in March that Dollar Tree sold its interest in Family Dollar for a whopping $1 billion. Brigade Capital Management and Macellum Capital Management, two private equity firms, have acquired the discount store. The agreement, which is anticipated to finalize next quarter, ends a problematic 10 years for the now-former partnership between the two brands.

Last year, Dollar Tree started looking into its options regarding the brand, including a possible sale or spinoff, after it was discovered that Family Dollar was “chronically underperforming.” J.P. Morgan Securities was in charge of the investigation.

“This is a major milestone in our multi-year transformation journey to help us fully achieve our potential,” Mike Creedon, CEO of Dollar Tree, Inc., said in the press release announcing the sale. “We will continue to grow and optimize our Dollar Tree business to maximize value for Dollar Tree associates, customers, and shareholders with an enhanced focus on compelling initiatives, including our expanded assortment, significant planned new store openings across the United States, and transactions that advance our growth strategy.”

“Since 1959, Family Dollar has served its customers by offering convenient, high-quality products at a great value and the business is a pillar in communities across the United States,” said Matt Perkal, partner at Brigade. “We look forward to continuing and enhancing Family Dollar as its own enterprise, which we are confident will drive greater success for the business and value for all of Family Dollar’s stakeholders, including employees, customers, and communities.”

Dollar Tree added that after looking into other options for Family Dollar for a while, the sale to Brigade Capital Management and Macellum Capital Management will allow it to focus on its core business.

In 2015, Dollar Tree paid almost $9 billion to acquire Family Dollar following a bidding war with rival Dollar General. Analysts claim that after acquiring the company, Dollar Tree encountered supply chain issues, poor store locations, and other operational difficulties.
