Ex-Asda chair Lord Rose ‘horrified’ by lack of growth under Labour
Former Asda chair and M&S boss Stuart Rose said he has been “horrified” by the UK’s lacklustre performance under the Labour government.

Former Asda chair and M&S boss Stuart Rose said he has been “horrified” by the UK’s lacklustre performance under Labour.
Rose blamed the government for the “worst economic situation” in the country since 1976.
“I did genuinely wish the Labour government well,” he told ITV’s Peston on Wednesday (14 May), adding that he was “deeply disappointed” by the Conservative Party’s fourteen year rule.
“We are now nearly one year and I am actually quite horrified by what I have seen.”
Rose listed a number of failures the government had failed to fix so far, including high debt levels, near-stagnant growth and low morale, as well as “no investment – that we need badly”.
“I don’t see any clear pathway to a route out at the moment,” he said.
Rose added Labour’s workers’ rights reforms, which will scrap zero-hour contracts and remove probationary periods to strengthen workers rights from day one, will “kick business up the arse”.
His comments come as the latest growth figures show a 0.7% rise in GDP – beating the 0.6% forecast – between January to March helped by increases in consumer spending and business investment.
