Few categories are as cosmopolitan and successful as sparkling wine, with winners from Italy to Hungary, England and South Africa, writes Patricia Stefanowicz.
THIS YEAR’S Global Sparkling
Masters competition was as complex as ever. Although seemingly dominated by Italy, with Asti and Moscato d’Asti and their compatriots Trentino and Lombardia totalling the highest number of entrants, the day featured a diverse range of fizz hailing from different countries, with a few star performances from Champagne to entice the judges.
Italy’s offering was, admittedly, variable. We had some excellent wines: a Rosato Nero d’Avola from Principi di Butera in Sicily, and a traditional method Pinot Noir-Chardonnay Alta Langa from Cuvage in Piemonte, both of which gained Gold medals. We also dished out a decent number of medals for Prosecco, including Cantina Andreola winning Gold for its Valdobbiadene Marna del Bacio Rive di San Pietro di Barbozza Extra Brut.
But Asti and Moscato d’Asti were a bit like spinning the roulette wheel. The likes of Ca’ d’Gal, Capetta, Cascina Carlòt di Claudio Mo, Caudrina, Cocchi and Tenute Il Falchetto got it just right. These glorious wines took home Golds for their exuberant fruit and gentle froth across the palate.
That said, in regard to the Asti and Moscato d’Asti wines, judges noted that there were too many examples this year that did not deliver the fresh, clean, fruity flavours that we love about these pours. As one experienced judge commented: “These wines live or die by their aromatic purity and intensity. Without the beautiful floral and fruit aromas, all you have is gassy soup. Stinky, soggy, smoky and fruitless.” Some wines had both oxidation and reduction. Volatile acidity affected a few, and there were a couple of bottles with cork taint.
Spain showed well, with both Catalunya and Castilla-La Mancha earning Silver medals for wines priced under £15. These wines often comprise the traditional Cava grape varieties of Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Parellada, but also produce blends in a more modern style, incorporating Chardonnay. Many of the wines from Jaume Serra, one of J García Carrión’s brands, are worth looking out for.
Elsewhere in Europe, special mentions must go to Hungary’s Törley Pezsgőpincészet’s Chardonnay-Pinot Noir and to Schlumberger and Josef Fritz from Austria, whose excellent wines earned well-deserved Gold medals.
As for the UK, we are producing some fine sparkling wines, with rapturous applause going to
Silverhand Estate in Kent, Weyborne in West Sussex and Sandridge Barton in Devon.

South Africa, too, had notable success this year with its serious, Méthode Cap Classique fizz. Pongrácz, Babylonstoren and Villiera impressed, especially with their Chardonnay-dominated wines. We had Silver medallists from Chile, California, Argentina, New Zealand and Australia... and a huge haul of Golds and Masters from Tasmania’s House of Arras. A sensational Champagne Pannier gained a Master, and our Grand Master, the crème de la crème, was Champagne Ayala’s Chardonnay-dominated Perle Vintage 2015, made from grands crus in the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims. Three further Master medals for traditional method Chardonnay fizz suggest that Chardonnay very much sets the standard. All in all, this year’s competition illustrates exactly why globally made sparkling wines are an enduring pleasure.

About the competition
With high-quality judges and a unique sampling process, The Global Sparkling Masters provides a chance for your wines to shine. The 2025 competition was judged on 7 May at The Milestone Hotel in London, employing experienced judges. The top wines were awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze medals according to their result, and those expressions that stood out as being outstanding received the ultimate accolade – the title of Sparkling Master.
