White Bordeaux from the 2024 vintage gained visibility and saw a decided boost in qualitive scores compared to last year, a new report by Wine Lister has said.  According to the fine wine business consultancy, it was white wines that dominated the quality improvements in this year’s campaign, based on a comparative critics scores from five different critics (Antonio Galloni and Neal Martin for Vinous.com, Bettane+Desseauve, JancisRobinson.com, and Ella Lister for Le Figaro).  This was amid only 20 wines recording an increase in critics’ scores in 2024. White wines - both sweet and dry - saw a 1.30 rise, which helped offset the drop in quality score between 2022 and 2023 (-0.82). The three wines that had seen the biggest increase in critic scores in this vintage, compared to last year were all whites – with La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc leading the way with an average increase score of +2.6 points, followed by Haut-Brion Blanc and Pavillon Blanc. La Mission Haut-Brion blanc, Haut-Brion blanc, and Domaine de Chevalier blanc gained 87, 66, and 47 places respectively, while Domaine de Chevalier Blanc and Guiraud rounded off the list – boosting the number of wines in the top 20 score rising wines to five. Meanwhile, seven white wines - Haut Brion Blanc, Guiraud, Suduiraut, Smith-Haut Lafitte Blanc, Domaine de Chevalier Blanc and Coutet - made it into the top 40 based on critics scores, up from only two last year (Suduiraut and Smith-Haut Lafitte Blanc). There was also something of a swell in brand visibility among the whites, both dry and sweet, with eight white wines in the top 20 places in search rank progression, the report noted, with eight white wines appearing in the top 20 spots, compared to just one last year (d’Yquem).

Reds in for a tougher time

Overall however, all eight major appellations saw a decrease in average critics’ scores for the red wines compared to the previous year, with the list of top-rising red wines being  dominated by wines priced between £20 and £77, so called “challenger wines” including those from lesser-known appellations and without classification. Overall, it noted that there was an overall average 30% discount for the 2024 vintage show compared to the average market price for the last 10 vintages, making this en primeur campaign “look well-priced on paper”, even if it had the end of a campaign had seen the market "caught between a rock and a hard place, with many producers having struggled to see demand despite offering large discounts, all the while navigating their own financial pressures."
