P&G Unveils Decarbonisation Framework to Guide Greener Beauty and Personal Care Manufacturing

THE WHAT? Procter & Gamble has developed a new decision-making framework to help chemical and consumer goods manufacturers chart low-carbon technology pathways, aiming to accelerate decarbonisation across global supply chains.

THE DETAILS Created in collaboration with Durham and Newcastle Universities and co-funded by UKRI’s Innovate UK, the 18-month research initiative integrates lifecycle assessment (LCA), technoeconomic analysis (TEA), and policy review. The resulting framework allows companies to evaluate the environmental and financial trade-offs of decarbonisation technologies. Findings underscore the critical role of low-cost green electricity and hydrogen in enabling deep emissions cuts in chemical processes—core to the production of cosmetic and personal care ingredients. Early results are already published in ACS Sustainable Resource Management, with more research to follow.

THE WHY?  As consumer goods companies face mounting pressure to tackle Scope 3 emissions—especially from raw material sourcing, product use, and disposal—P&G’s framework offers a tool to support more sustainable decision-making across the full product lifecycle. For the personal care industry, where ingredient transparency and sustainability are top consumer priorities, this framework could become instrumental in guiding innovation that aligns with both regulatory and environmental targets. P&G aims to reduce its Scope 3 emissions by 40% per unit of production by 2030, with a broader net-zero goal for 2040.
