The image I can’t shake is a mother of two placed on a ventilator in the spring of 2021. She had declined vaccination after hearing the mRNA shot would “rewrite her DNA.” Despite every therapy our ICU could offer once I was called in, she never woke up.

During the first Covid winter of 2020, I watched dozens of nursing home residents die while we waited for a vaccine to be available. By the time this mother arrived, safe and effective vaccines were plentiful. Yet nearly every critically ill patient I was asked to see shared one trait: They were unvaccinated, casualties of a flood of misinformation.
