We’ve been hearing news of tanking Tesla sales in Europe for a while now, but owners on the Old Continent are now taking the automaker to court. French Tesla owners are suing the company, saying their cars have become symbols of the extreme political right.

The owners say they have suffered “direct and concrete” damage from CEO Elon Musk’s “actions.” They’re asking the court to terminate their leases and reimburse legal costs, saying “Because of Elon Musk’s actions… Tesla-branded vehicles have become strong political symbols and now appear to be veritable extreme-right ‘totems,’ to the dismay of those who acquired them with the sole aim of possessing an innovative and ecological vehicle.”
It's an interesting argument, so it will be interesting to see the French court’s decision. The plaintiffs say Musk’s actions have prevented them “from fully enjoying their car,” saying they’re tired of feeling judged for driving a Tesla. No such legal actions are underway here, yet, but vandalism of Tesla vehicles has made news since Musk became involved in government.

Whether or not Tesla can recover is yet to be seen. Musk has largely backed away from high-profile federal government work, but many say the damage has been done and that it will take a long time for the company to make amends. That said, Tesla is promising some exciting technologies over the coming months and public opinion can be fickle, so we could be singing a different tune come December.
