Asda to double electric home delivery fleet in £1.3m investment

Asda is investing £1.3m into expanding its electric home delivery fleet as part of its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the business.

The supermarket chain will launch 112 new vans – more than double its current fleet – and introduce charging points for the vehicles at its stores.

The rollout means that by September around 21 Asda stores will operate a fully electric home delivery fleet, which are estimated to deliver over a million orders for the remaining months of the year.

The supermarket said that the electric vehicles, which have a range of up to 130 miles, will help to save 1700kg of CO2 emissions per year.

Asda senior director of ecommerce last mile Emma Newton said: “We’re always looking at how we can better serve our customers and for new ways to reduce our carbon emissions as a business, so we’re delighted to be more than doubling our electric fleet of grocery home shopping vehicles.”

The retailer first rolled out the new fleet of vehicles in 2023 at its Gillingham Pier, Old Kent Road and Sheffield Chaucer stores.

The switch, meant to supply more than 345,000 households combined, will save over 400,000kg of CO2 emissions per year, it said at the time.
