Torrid Shake-Up: Up to 180 Stores Set To Shutter Nationwide

Fashion retailer Torrid is set to close 180 underperforming stores nationwide.

Per a report detailing its first quarter 2025 results, Torrid Holdings revealed the shuttering of close to 30% of its stores in 2025. While earlier plans called for shutting down 40 to 50 locations, the retailer is now on track to close up to 180 stores before the end of the year. This marks a major escalation from 2024, when only 26 stores were closed out of the 658 in operation.

CEO Lisa Harper said of the shutdowns, “I’m proud of the strong progress we made this quarter across our strategic initiatives. We delivered first-quarter results in line with expectations, with $266 million in net sales and $27.1 million in Adjusted EBITDA — reflecting our continued focus on disciplined execution and profitability.”

“Our sub-brand strategy is delivering positive results, exceeding expectations, and helping us reach new and younger customers while driving higher margin sales. With the upcoming launches of Lovesick and Studio Luxe, we’re doubling down on this momentum and expect sub-brands to represent nearly a third of our business by 2026,” she added.

Harper continued, “At the same time, digital continues to be our customers’ preferred channel, now approaching 70% of total demand. We’re accelerating our transformation to a more digitally-led business, which includes optimizing our retail footprint.”

Therefore, Harper shared that the resulting choice, to close up to 180 underperforming stores this year, allows the fashion retailer to “reduce fixed costs” and “reinvest in areas that drive long-term growth.” The company plans to optimize how businesses manage customer interactions across various channels, leading to a more seamless and efficient shopping experience.

She concluded that by leveraging the brand’s connection to its customer base, this transformation will “position us for efficient and accelerated top and bottom-line growth.” Harper believes that these changes will continue to maintain Torrid’s fiscal health and help the brand remain resilient for the future.

Torrid’s Financial Highlights for the First Quarter of Fiscal 2025

The press release detailed Torrid’s retail performance in 2025 so far, outlining both its successes and setbacks.

  • Net sales declined by 4.9%, totaling $266.0 million, down from $279.8 million in the same period last year. Comparable sales experienced a 3.5% decrease during the first quarter.
  • Gross profit margin stood at 38.1%, a drop from 41.3% in the prior-year quarter. This decline was largely attributed to lower net sales, influenced in part by strategic promotions and corporate investments.
  • Net income reached $5.9 million, or $0.06 per share, compared to $12.2 million, or $0.12 per share, in the previous year’s first quarter.
  • Adjusted EBITDA came in at $27.1 million, representing 10.2% of net sales, compared to $38.2 million, or 13.7% of net sales, in the first quarter of the prior year.
  • During the quarter, two Torrid stores were closed, leaving a total of 632 stores in operation at quarter-end.

The Torrid brand remains committed to delivering stylish and inclusive fashion for curvy women. The brand emphasizes comfort, affordability, and trend-forward design, including everything from denim and dresses to activewear, intimates, footwear, and accessories.
