Ben Stokes bats for alcohol-free spirits
England Cricket captain Ben Stokes has been announced as a new backer of CleanCo, the alcohol-free spirits brand founded by ex-Made in Chelsea star Spencer Matthews. Ben Stokes at Lords holding two bottles of CleanCo Stokes, who recently declared that he was ready to return as an allrounder for England's upcoming Tests against Zimbabwe and India after a hamstring injury left him unable to play since late last year, has put his time off the cricket pitch to good use, becoming a new strategic investor in CleanCo as part of a US$5 million fundraiser for the company. The cricketer's interest in the alcohol-free drinks sector stems from his own recent sobriety, with the England captain having given up alcohol during his recent injury rehabilitation – he claimed on Matthews' Untapped podcast that he had not had alcohol since 2 January this year, though he also shared that he would still enjoy a "social drink" once he has recovered, though he would not take the "all or nothing" approach to drinking. On the podcast, Stokes revealed that he stumbled upon CleanCo when searching online for non-alcoholic drinks, and was "thrilled" to come on board as an investor. He also shared that he was bowled over by the quality of the CleanCo range, which currently includes the likes of the Clean G (meant as a substitute for gin), Clean R (for rum) and Clean T (for Tequila). "Discovering that they are the best in the game and their products are really that good, I knew that I wanted to be involved in a serious capacity," he remarked. "Getting to know Spencer, the team and the category potential, only fuelled my intent to be part of this pioneering brand. I was seriously impressed to learn of the mark et opportunity and CleanCo’s dominance in the space." CleanCo recently transitioned from non-alcoholic, with its drinks having an ABV of 0.4%, down to alcohol-free, with an ABV of 0.0%.
